What we can discuss
Choose caregivers and alternates thoughtfully
Discuss the people you would want considered as guardians, their willingness to serve, and their ability to meet your children’s needs. Consider siblings, school, location, important relationships, and backup choices.
Consider care and money separately
The person caring for a child and the person managing funds may have different strengths. Discuss how an inheritance should be managed, who should oversee it, and how life-insurance and other beneficiary arrangements fit the plan.
Prepare for the practical gap
Gather emergency contacts, school information, routines, and relevant care instructions. Keep sensitive details secure and explain where authorized caregivers can find them. Practical instructions support the legal plan but do not replace required legal authority.
Common questions
Does nominating a guardian guarantee the appointment?
No. The court retains responsibility for the appointment. A properly prepared nomination communicates your preference, subject to applicable law and the child’s circumstances.
When should we revisit the plan?
Review it after births, moves, family changes, or changes in a nominee’s health or availability. Confirm that your preferred people remain willing to help.
